How to Get Active on a Caribbean Cruise

Cruise Circle

Who says a Caribbean cruise is just about sun, sand and sea? Rest assured, there are plenty of adrenalin-inducing activities guaranteed to keep thrill-seekers on their toes. Here are some of our favourite adventure days out...

Simply the greatest

Carnival Cruise Line has thrown everything into the action-packed ‘Greatest Outdoor Adventure’ tour in Cozumel. The tour involves a high-speed ATV ride through the jungle, tightrope walking, rappelling into a cave, and ziplining into a cenote (sinkhole). Take a change of clothes, swimmers, a towel, and a head for heights.

We are sailing

Hoist up the mainsail because we’re joining a yacht-racing crew. No sitting around while others do the work on this excursion, there's a regatta to be won! Offered in St Maarten by Royal Caribbean International, no experience is needed; just a sense of adventure, strong arms and a yearning for victory. Win or lose, afterwards you’ll toast the effort with your fellow sailors, enjoying a rum punch...this is the Caribbean after all.

In the swing

Channel your inner Tarzan as you swing through the trees in St Lucia’s rainforests, available when you join Norwegian Cruise Line’s sky canopy and aerial tram adventure. The tram is the easy part, taking you high up into the rainforest to the top station. You’ll then harness up and get ready to fly from tree to tree on eight different ziplines. The views below and across the tree tops are amazing, if you dare to look!

A need for speed

Enjoy a two-for-one day of action-packed thrills in Jamaica on this excursion from Princess Cruises. It starts with a chairlift to take you 700 feet up Mystic Mountain, then it’s all systems go as your bobsled twists and turns down 3,280 feet of track, hitting speeds of up to 40 miles an hour. Once back at sea level, it’s off to Dunn’s River Falls to climb a waterfall. Sounds so simple doesn’t it? What they don’t tell you is it’s slippery, there are boulders in the way and the water is gushing down as you inch your way up. Probably the most cautious fun you’ll ever have getting very, very wet.

Fluming marvellous

Get ready for a thrill-a-thon day out on more than a dozen high-octane waterslides as Celebrity Cruises docks in Perfect Day at Coco Cay (sister line Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas). Racing down flumes might not sound strenuous but after you have climbed the 135-foot-tall Daredevils Peak to come whooshing down a few times it really is! The names of the slides say it all – Slingshot, Twister, Tailspin and Splash Speedway. Luckily the island also has plenty of beaches where you can relax and get your breath back.
